New 4k imac slower than 6 year old PC with lowe...

Hi guys,

I'm new to imacs. I just bought a 4k imac. I love the beautiful screen and sleek design but I am very disappointed with the performance.  I didn't realise I should have upgraded the expensive components in it before buying it. It's 8gb of ram and all the basic option. Whenever I open an application or do something I always get the little spinning rainbow wheel for a while. It's very frustrating having to wait whenever I do something.

My old pc that has 8gb of ram an old intel core i5 2.80GHz runs faster. Way faster actually. I never had any problems for waiting for things to load or open on windows.

It also sad that I can't upgrade any component in my imac. I would probably like a way faster hard drive. I have no clue why apple put such a slow one in there. More ram would be nice as well. Also a nice graphics card. But doing that I would have to just get a new imac? Feels like such a waste.

Anyways... It hasn't been such a nice switch over to apple. Just not as impressed as I thought I would be.

If I am missing something completely and you can upgrade parts or my imac is running slow because something is running in the background. Then let me know. I don't really know how to use one of these yet.

Anyways. Sorry to be so negative on here. Just not happy with my experience.

You have 14 days to return the iMac to Apple for a full refund.

If you want a faster 21 inch screen iMac, pay the extra for the i7 CPU option, 16 GBs of RAM and get one with an SSD (Solid State Drive), instead.

If you need more storage, plan on adding either an extra external Thunderbolt or USB 3 hard drive or a larger, third party SSD in a Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 enclosure.

That is the only way to get the fastest possible 21 inch screen iMac.

OR

Bite the bullet and opt for a high end 27 inch screen model, with optional higher speed i5 and i7 CPUs, which still has user installable RAM slots, faster 7200 RPM hard drive/fusion drive components AND discreet, independent up to 4 GB VRAM GPUs.

you can replace the drive with an SSD because it's got a 5000 RPM HDD which is the slower SATA option.

you can upgrade the RAM at the time of purchase only.

as for the GPU, not a chance. It's integrated and this is going to be the bottleneck for populating a 4K screen

Your computer is only as fast as it's slowest component. and while we are all mac fans I can say the last laptop I bought was under $1K and it will go toe-to-toe with the flagship MBP in every department.

Unless you purchase the top end 21 inch screen iMac with all of the installed RAM and either the 256 GB or 512 GB SSD, the other options are "just" good enough for normal sorts of computing, not for professional or creative work.

Everything in the 21 inch screen iMacs have been really scaled back.

The new, slimline model 21 inch screen iMacs feel more like a computing downgrade from what used to be offered in the 21 inch iMac lineup.

The smaller screen iMacs feel more like a pumped up Mac Mini with a built-in screen, now.

The only choice to turn the 21 inch screen iMac into the more creative professional, powerful, and futureproof computer is to purchase all the maxed out options (minus the non-upgradeable GPU).

That is really the only option to get the fastest 21 inch screen iMac possible.

I was wondering if you had found any solutions for the speed of this computer? It's really frustrating. Spending over 1000k on something and having it be worse than an 8 year old Asus.

Ugh, Why are these not upgradeable
