Where are my personal files on my macbook

Sorry if this has been asked before...I have to do a complete wipe of my macbook (too many spinning balls, unexpected closures, long boot times, etc...).  I don't want to do a time machine backup so as not to bring any file errors, junk, crap etc back onto the machine after I restore it to new.  So I want to hook up an external drive, copy all my stuff to it, wipe and restore my macbook and systematically bring my personal stuff back onto "new" machine.  Help anyone?
