lost calendar items

I've been helping someone, and last week something came up to update to iCloud. We did, and then all calendar items were gone.

Found a fix by deleting library cache. I instead moved it (can't find it now), and it worked, however, a few, including a recurring one from years ago is not back.

I looked for 'ics' files with the event name and found a few occurrences in Finder, but most are gone.

He has an external backup with Time Machine. Thought of restoring, however, I am concerned if restoring will erase any newly added events.

How can I find these missing events?
