Photos volume decreases when export/import.

I keep photos in the Photos App on my MacBook Pro.  In order to alter the filename I export to the desktop using title, then import to Photos again.  Then I delete the original and have one with the same filename as title.  However, this process causes the volume to decrease e.g. from 5.1 to 3.9 MB or from 1.9MB to 784KB.  Why does this happen?  Will it affect the quality of the picture - I ultimately want to publish them? Is there any other effect?
