question about backups

When you do a basic backup to a Time Capsule, does that backup your entire computer each time?

Time Machine basically makes a complete copy of your Mac the first time that it backs up your Mac. After the first "master" backup is done, Time Machine only backs up the changes that have occurred on your Mac since the last backup.

Probably more than you want to know in this Apple Support document:

How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

By default, it’ll back up the volume containing Mac OS X, except for items in the Trash and temporary items in some system-level folders. It’ll also back up any other volumes formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) on the internal drive.

It won’t back up external drives unless set to, and can’t back up a Boot Camp partition.
