Mail start position in list on iPad

I have an iPad (iPad Air 64Gb) and iPhone (iPhone 6s 64Gb) and the way that Mail works on each device is different. The iPad has a couple of redundant steps that make it less efficient to use than the iPhone.

On my iPad when I first start Mail I get a blank page titled 'Mailboxes' and with the words 'No Messages Selected'prominently shown in the middle of the screen. At the top left of the screen is a 'Back' arrow and if I press this I get a list of all of my mail accounts. (Question: what is the purpose of the 'Mailboxes' screen?  As far as I can see it has no useful purpose and is just an unnecessary step in the way of me accessing my mail accounts).

If I choose an account I get a list of all messages, BUT the mail program positions itself to messages that are several months old. If I want to see my latest messages I have to scroll up to the top of the list. Since I typically have several hundred messages in my list this is a real pain as I typically have to scroll past a couple of hundred messages to see my most recent messages. (Question: why doesn't the Mail program position itself at the top of the list of messages, showing most recent first?).  The actual position that the Mail program chooses does sometimes vary, but it is NEVER at the top of the list where it would be most useful.

On my iPhone everything is great. The mail program avoids the redundant 'Mailboxes' page and goes straight to a list of my mail accounts. When  I choose an account then it positions itself at the top of the list (most recent message). This is as things should be.

Why is the mail program on the iPad so much less efficient than the mail program on the iPhone? As far as I ca see both devices are set up identically.

Grateful for any help.

In general , Settings, check the setting you like on iPhone and use same settings on iPad.  Look under "Mail".

TThanks for your reply.

THis is was actually the first thing I checked. Both devices use the same settings.

What you describe is not the way Mail should behave.

Go thru the standard troubleshooting steps of Reset and Restore from backup. Hopefully, you won't have to resort to Restore as New - that is painful...

Reset: hold down the Home and Power buttons until you see the Apple logo (10-20 seconds).

If this doesn't help, you might need to Restore your iPhone.

Thanks Rysz,

I've done a restart several times but the problem persists.  It has also stayed with me during several historical updates of the iOS software so I'm not sure if reloading will help. I suppose its just possible that some of the messages held in my IMAP account have been corrupted in such a way as to fox the Apple software.

I'm due back in the UK in a few days so I'll pop into a local Apple store and see if anyone there has any ideas. Just as an aside I have paid Apple for a support package on my iPad, but Apple's support website keep telling me that support is not available to me in my current location. (I've been out of the UK for quite a while). That's why I contacted Community support to see if they can help.

I have this same issue: If I choose an account on my iPad I get a list of all messages, BUT the mail program positions itself to messages that are several months old.

Can someone help with ideas - short of resetting the iPad?

Thanks
