Spotlight not working

Hi,

since I upgraded to Sierra, Spotlight does not work anymore. I get no results when searching inside Mail.app and no search results when searching using spotlight search.

I have already tried to reset Spotlight search, but when I try to add a location in privacy tab, an error message shows up, telling me: (might not be 100% correct, as I am translating from german)

Error in Privacy

(null)

The Object can not be added or deleted due to an unknown error.

I reinstalled Sierra already, deleted the .Spotlight-V100 Folder, but still does not work.

Can anybody help.

Many thanks

Manuel

Sorry, but did not solve the issue. I still don't get any result when searching in Mail and Spotlight search only shows some web search results.

I was able to add some Volume to the Privacy Tab in Spotlight Setting, but not the Startvolume.

I even tried with another user on my Mac, but the same there.

Any idea

Open safari preferences select as in screen shot.

Hi,

sorry, but I don't see any relation between the Safari settings and my Spotlight problems. I followed your instructions, but this did not solve my problem.

In the Mac OS version before Sierra, I used spotlight to find Apps, when I wanted to start them, to find Documents, PDFs etc.. In Mail I used the search function to find eMails from specific a person or with specific content.

Since the Upgrade to Sierra, when I typ i.e. 1Password into Spotlight search to open the app, the only results I get are from the Browser History, containing 1Password.

I have installed 1Password but the app is not shown in the results. This is the same for every app, I've tried.

Same situation with Documents. When I search i.e. for "Einladung" Spotlight shows the content of the Dictionary, but nothing else, no .docx, .txt, ... although there are several docs with the word "Einladung" stored in my Documents folder.

In the Mail.app, when I search for a person, that has sent me several or almost hundreds of eMails, the search result is completely empty, as if there was no mail from this person at all or if the indexing is not working. :-(

Does anyone have the same issues and found a solution?

I never typed one word password in spotlight , since using Mac computer .

Thanks !

You need to reindex spotlight.

Hi,

doesn't work. When I add MacintoshHD to the Privacy Tab, I receive a strange error message

As already described, I manually deleted the .Spotlight-V100 Folder, but no change in behaviour.

This is very annoying :-(

I tried everything mentioned on the following webpage: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/254039/spotlight-borked-after-macos-sie rra-update

But still does not work for me.

Hello,

I had the same issue and I tried many different solutions posted on various sites but without any success.

While digging for the solution I found this file

.metadata_never_index

on the root of my Mac drive and I think that it was causing the issue!

In any case, this is what I did and it fixed my problem:

  1. First in Terminal app (ie. Applications > Utilities > Terminal) we should stop the spotlight, so I typed:
    1. sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist - this commands should disable Spotlight indexing.
  2. Then I removed the fault causing file. Also in the Terminal type:
    1. sudo rm -R /.Spotlight-V100 - this will remove the indexing folder from the hard drive and it will be automatically regenerated in the following steps.
    2. sudo mv /.metadata_never_index ~/Desktop - I think that this file is the issue so move it to the Desktop just in case.
  3. Next I started the Spotlight by typing the following in the Terminal:
    1. sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

After these steps i saw that the Spotlight was reindexing and it started showing apps and my files again

so i deleted previously back-upped file with: sudo rm ~/Desktop/.metadata_never_index

Hope this helps!

Good luck!

This worked for me too, thanks!

This happens to me a lot also. I've tried all kind of terminal commands and so far the only way to fix it (at least for me) is to restart with Command R and reinstall the OS. Then it indexes properly for a while
