how do i know my mac has a virus? can a macbook...

so i have visited a movie website that was free; they made me watch the movie everything was fine till half way i receive an alert saying about a virus being on my mac. i didn't download anything at this point so i just cleared my history thinking it was a scam. then the next day i wanted to watch the other half of the movie so i went to another website and everything was fine and then i went to watch another movie. again good till at one point they were saying i had to download something called adobeplayerinstaller.dmg  but i know never to download (even though its said adobe isn't that bad because lots of people have it but i was still afraid because of the website) and i never pressed anything but then it went into my downloads even though i never clicked anything. then i get an alert that my mac has a virus again! i cleared my history and now i really am worried so i need help on what to do. mainly the questions are if i have a possibility of virus how can i check? if i do how can i get rid of it? and can my mac even get a virus being the version 10.11.5 os x el capitan. thank you!

Those are both scams. Unless you’ve just uploaded a file to a website(or are running Windows), there isn’t any way for it to tell that there’s malware on your computer.
