How to transfer data from MBP to MacPro
Is it possible to transfer the data from my MBP and move it to a Partition on my MacPro, before I do a clean install on the MBP.
I don't have an external drive available nor an empty drive on my MacPro just a partition that is empty.
I want to be able to move the data back after the clean install.
What would be the best method to use to accomplish this.
Thank you.
Hi,
Yes, you could make the partition a Time Machine backup disk and then restore from it: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201250
You could also make a bootable clone using Carbon Copy Cloner (free 30 day trial) and restore from it using Migration Assistant: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350
If you just want the data in your user folder, you could drag and drop that data onto the MP's empty partition, then drag and drop it back to your MBP after the erase/install. Note that this would mean reinstalling all third party apps and recreating all your settings.
One approach: Disk Utility for Mac: Restore a disk

Hi JmDo:
You could use a variety of methods, but I guess it depends on how concerned you are about losing data.
My preferred method would be to use Carbon Copy Cloner as TJK has suggested.
Here is why.
I just bought a new 15" MacBook Pro 2017. I still had my old 13" MacBook Pro 2011.
I copied all the data from 13" to a Synology NAS and then copied to new 15".
But I had to go back to 2011 MacBook a number of times for various reasons.
e.g. What apps do I have installed. How were they set up.
What preferences was I using.
Forgot to copy all my pictures from Photos.
Needed all my music files from iTunes.
Anyway, my point is, that if you make a bootable copy of your existing drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, you will be able to boot from that drive in case you have any questions of what was on your old drive.
Also if the new install goes bad, you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore your drive.
Also external drives are very cheap. Amazon has one for $79.00. Seagate Expansion 1TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEA1000400): Amazon.ca: Computers & Tablets
Hope this helps,
Kim
Thanks guys for the great suggestions.
I took your advice tjk and made a clone, the install went off without a hitch but I'm hesitant about transferring everything back from the clone.
The reason I decided on a clean install was because my MBP was running so slow, I'm hoping that the clean install will fix that but I'm concerned that I might be loading back onto my computer some of the bad stuff that was causing it to run slow.
Is there a tried and true method that would work to weed out any problems during the transfer back.
Thanks
You're hesitant for a good reason; you don't want to move the issues right back.
The best way is to install all your apps from scratch, drag and drop your data files into the new user account, and recreate all your settings. Laborious, but I do it every year or so to keep things "clean."
Probably the next best way is to use Migrations Assistant (Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support) and when it asks how you want transfer your information, select From a ... startup disk, choose the clone, then just choose to transfer just your user account, or more as you choose. The more you choose, the more of the "old" you're transferring over, but the less work you'll have to do afterwards.
Thanks tjk, that will get me going on the right track.
Appreciate all of your help.
You're welcome.
