Airdrop mkv file to iOS 11

I used to be able to use airdrop an MKV file to my iPad, running iOS10, and the file would automatically open in VLC and added to my iPad.

After the update to iOS 11, it seems the MKV file extension is no longer recognised and I am told I am sharing a file that needs an app from the App Store. My options then are App Store, Save to iCloud Drive or Decline.

This has done away with the wireless way of sharing a file with the iPad and now I have to connect it with a cable and drop files to VLC via iTunes.
