Turntable to mac problem

I have a USB-1 turntable I am trying to connect to my MAC with a USB cable. This turntable worked perfectly on my old windows computer. I don't think it's the cable or the USB port. Unfortunately, I see it as in input in MIDI setup but I can't adjust levels, and in the audio input I see no activity on the meter. Any ideas on what to do? Do I need a pre-amp? Any advice is much appreciated!

A MacBook cannot run iOS. What version of OS X are you running (presumably not the old Tiger OS 10.4 covered by this forum)?

I am running the latest version of Sierra. Not sure why I posted In the Tiger forum.
