It may help to check that you are following Apple's instructions here:

• Use camera remote and timer

If the camera remote feature is not working as expected, then the following steps may help:

• Check that your Apple Watch is connected to your iPhone:
  • If your Apple Watch isn't connected or paired with your iPhone - Apple Support

• Restart (normally) both your iPhone and your Apple Watch, turning both off together, then restarting your iPhone first:
  • Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  • Restart your Apple Watch - Apple Support
  • Note that Apple advises that you should not force restart (sometimes referred to inaccurately as "hard reset") either your Apple Watch or your iPhone unless that device is unresponsive and cannot be restarted normally.

Hard reset is an accurate term.  It might not be Apple's term of choice, but its still a valid one.

Thanks for your help can you confirm you see the image on your watch that the lens on the camera sees

Yes, I can see the image from my camera on my watch.  I have experienced the image not working, simply shutting the devices down and restarting them didn't work.

I had to Hard Reset (or Force Reset for the Apple Sensitive) the Watch before it would work again. 

This was a year or so ago, so not WatchOS 4 related.

If the issue persists, it may next help to force the Camera app on your iPhone to close and then restart your devices again:

Thanks hard reset on phone and watch sorted it out  not something I use a lot but thought it did show the image  thanks again
