Macbook Pro Superdrive not working?

Although I have found many threads alike, nothing seems to have worked for me so far.

I bought a 13 inch Macbook Pro around Spring 2011 and have been using it with no issues until now.

The issue is that the Superdrive is refusing to read CD's and DVD's. With Audio CD's it spits them out almost instantly, but not before making a rather discouraging 'error' noise. With DVD's it tries to read them multiple times and usually takes around 30 seconds to a minute for it to eject it automatically and makes the same loading noise around 3-5 times during attempts.

I haven't used the Macbook to play many DVD's or games and I have only played a few CD's using iTunes. I discovered this issue yesterday after attempting to play a game in my macbook. I tried around 3 DVD's and CD's and all of them showed the same results. I am positive that this is a hardware issue as the DVD's & CD's play in other machines with absolutely no issues.

I have tried blowing air into the superdrive, resetting the SCM, repairing 'Macintosh HD' in Disk Utility, resetting the PRAM, running in Safe Mode and creating a new user account and obviously up to now, nothing has worked.

Is there anything else I should try before taking it into an Apple Store? I have made a genius bar appointment for next Monday but I am wondering if there is anything else that I should try first.

It is also probably worth mentioning that I have run the same discs in the past multiple times without fail, and also that the drive still appears on System Profiler. Perhaps also that I haven't used the Superdrive in a long time and I have updated this machine several times after using it. Also; I can't get hold of a lens-cleaner before Monday, so that's out of the question.

If it is a hardware issue, and the Superdrive does require to be fixed/replaced, how much would this cost, as my Macbook is technically no longer under Warranty?

The name listed in System Profiler states: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS23N under 'Disk Burning' and it also says 'Reads DVD: Yes'.

Many Thanks.

In my previous and now dead Early 2008 MBP, in its final years the SuperDrive would get cantankerous just the same. I ended buying a Memorex "dry-clean" Optical Drive Cleaner. It consists of a regular CD that has three rows of very thin and soft bristles attached to the "business end". You put it in, and has voice guidance that leads you to wiping the lens of the drive while you play the music. Until the day it died, never failed to restore the drive to full working order.

My current MBP is too new to have gotten glitchy yet.

Thanks for the info, although as stated, I'm not sure I'd be able to get hold of one before Monday, as I am currently away from home.

How much did the cleaner cost, if you can remember?

Couple of bucks. Most music store carry them, as "dust in the lens" is a fairly common occurrence.

Fair enough, thanks. On my way back home I'll try and see if there's anywhere that may sell one, and then try that.

I managed to get hold of a disk cleaner, although after multiple tries to run it; no joy. Still, no disk can be read and the same process is repeated during attempts. I'm guessing that the optic lens is the issue then.

First, if the Mac is still within its one-year base warranty, get it over to the Store pronto so the drive can be replaced for free.

Second, if the Mac is still within its one-year base warranty, seriously consider purchasing the 2-year AppleCare warranty extension right now. Can prove to be cheaper than having to pay for repairs down the road.

If the warranty is kaput and none of the above apply, can check in PowerBookMedic.com or IFixIt.com for the cost of a new drive. Cause it seems like it is kaput too. Unless you're all ten thumbs, replacement is fairly straightforward. The same places mentioned have detailed videos or pictorials on the procedure.

Just for reference, anothe poster reported a $180 cost at Genius Bar to replace Superdrive.

Thanks guys, I don't think that the Mac is still under warranty, although I can't remember if I asked for an extended warranty or not. I don't mind paying for repairs too much, although it does annoy me as I've never really dropped the Mac or anything. Also how i've only had it for about a year and a half.

@steve359 I'll see what they say at the Genius Bar appointment and hopefully it won't cost too much to repair.

Check your warranty and service options here (serial number on the bottom, or copy/paste from About this Mac / More Info... on Apple menu):

Yeah, it says both Technical Support & Repairs are both expired, unfortunately.

Hi,

Solved the problem of my superdrive. I recently upgraded my mac book pro to mountain lion. My superdrive of macbook pro late 2011 was ejecting the dvd after some trials. It was not reading any DVD. After some research i found a dumper for matshita drive. I used the dumper from this link https://www.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=46116 and after the dump, my superdrive started working very well as it used to do. I was wondering earlier that how to claim the warranty, as i did not have its original receipt. This solution should work for those who believe that there superdrive has suddenly stopped working after any upgradation.

Sadly the link takes you to an outdated page...
