Mission controll spawning over 90 empty desktop...
I've been noticing my Mac acting a little "sluggish" the last few days. Just had a look at Mission Control and it's displaying 90+ empty desktop instances. It looks like every time I accidentally two-finger swipe left/right, a new instance of my Desktop is pinned to Mission Control. So, a couple questions...
1. How do I close these windows (aside from going one-by-one)?
2. How do I stop these new instances from spawning?
Thanks,
k.
The maximum number of spaces is supposed to be 16. Are you sure you have more than that?
Yes, I can tell you, with 100% confidence, I had over 90 instances of my "desktop" within Mission Control—I know, for sure, because it took me almost 10 minutes to close them all as, one-by-one. At the scale they were at, getting the X to show up, to close the instance, and then actually click on the X (without moving outside of the target area, thus resulting in the X disappearing) was...well...very frustrating.
This morning, I checked and I'm now at 16 (and I can't to get any more than that, but I'll keep monitoring—but I assume my 90+ was a bug of some sort). Anyway, that said, I've once again spawned 16 blank desktops within Mission Control. So, 16 or 90, having these desktop instances is annoying. I don't know why these keep spewing, now how to stop them? Any advice?
Thanks,
Kristin.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
I have 46 Desktops and the same problem getting rid of them -- one-by-one. I like to keep 4 but 46 is a bit too much. They seem to spawn across the entire width of my 30" Apple Monitor -- which I have had for about a decade. The only thing attached to the PB is the monitor, external harddrive, and speakers.
How to do a mass delete? How to prevent the spawn from reappearing again and again and again and again. I don't remember having this problem before Yosemite but it has been going on for sometime now so maybe it started with Maverick.
Anyone get anywhere with this? My computer started chugging again, and of course, I have 76 empty desktops hanging out in Mission Control. Super annoying...
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.
Yep, bug report submitted already.
Any luck with a solution to this problem? I have noticed this for quite some time now. I have to remember to open mission control from time to time to get rid of the desktops that have piled up.
Yes - would like a "Spawn lock" button.
I actually never use extra desktops, but I have to regularly go in there and delete 30 or 40 of them.
Thanks for posing the question.
I've got 338!!!
