iCloud ID change?

my iCloud user ID used a now defunct email; how do I change ID to a current email that works?

You can change the email address which forms your Apple ID at https://appleid.apple.com provided it's not an Apple address (e.g. @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com); however you cannot change it to any Apple address including your iCloud address because this is an Apple ID in itself. You can change it to any working non-Apple address.

In any event it's vital that Apple have a contact address for you which is not your Apple one, because if something goes wrong and you are unable to access your account they will have no way of contacting you.

The non-Apple address which forms your ID cannot be seen by anyone other than Apple, and the service providing that address has no access whatever to your Apple ID or your iCloud account.
