Sudden problem charging iPad

I have a few Apple brand charging cables but as of last night, only one will charge my iPad mini 4. It looks like the one that "works" has been damaged (see photo below)

all of the other cables that previously worked fall right out of the port. The port itself doesn't appear damaged...

Is it possible the charging cable melted while inside the iPad during the last chargi session (yesterday afternoon)? Ca
