iMac (Late 2012) Will Not Display at 2560x1440

I have a late 2012 iMac and recently bought a ViewSonic VX2478-smhd monitor that's capable of 2560x1400 but when that resolution is selected all I get is a blank screen / no signal message. I'm using a Cable Matters Mini DisplayPort Cable to connect the iMac to the monitor. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

You didn't say if it's a 21 or 27" iMac.

The smaller screen model has a max (native) resolution of 1920x1080 and the 27 a 2560x1440 resolution display. If you do have a 27", I'd try to adjust the settings on the monitor following their instructions in the manual.

I have the 21.5", but according to Apple's tech specs:

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display

from: iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012) - Technical Specifications

I've tried fiddling around with some of the settings on the display but so far it's not gotten me anywhere yet sadly.

Here is one of the 21" models' specs:

https://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i5-2.7-21-inch-alumin um-late-2012-specs.html

The sentence you quote says "full native resolution on the built in display" which means it can go to 1920x1080.

The 24" ViewSonic monitor should run at it's native resolution with Mirroring Off in Extended Desktop. It will not in Mirroring, because your internal monitor is only 1920x1080.

1. Reset your iMac NVRAM, as per > How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

2. Try a different brand of MiniDisplay Port to MiniDisplay Port cable.

Select Series Mini DisplayPort 1.2 Cable, 3ft - Monoprice.com

3. Try using the Mini DisplayPort to Display Port cable that came in the package with the ViewSonic monitor.
