2011 MacBook Pro running very slowly

Hello,

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro which runs very slowly, frequently showing a beachball as I try to use the computer. Should I buy a new computer, or is there more life left in this computer if I make upgrades? I'm a bit technically clueless overall but I did run an EtreCheck report, pasted below.

Thanks for your help!

EtreCheck version: 3.4.5 (455)

(Also, I tried to delete Dr. Cleaner, though I obviously left some remnants of the program on my computer and I can't really figure out how to find and delete them.)

First, you only have 4 GB RAM installed - that is considered the absolute minimum for any of the newer OS versions. Second, you do have a slower 5400 rpm hard drive (which does everything about 33% slower than the standard 7200 rpm drive in an iMac).

I'd get in touch with the Dr Cleaner developer/website and see about their uninstall instructions - if you've removed parts of it, you may have to reinstall it and then use their uninstaller.

It's a bit difficult - yours would greatly improve by adding more RAM and replacing the hard drive with an SSD, but on the other hand, it is 6 years old and may not be worth the investment.

Thanks, babowa! I think it probably makes to buy a new computer.

If you plan on keeping your MBP and giving it a 2017 hardware refresh it may costs you about $220 - $320

16gb ram = $120 ( Crucial ram )

New battery = $100

New SSD ( 256gb. ) = $100 ( Crucial BX300 )

or

8gb ram = $60

New battery = $100

New 120gb. SSD = $60

I replaced the slow HD in my 2012 MBP with an SSD from OWC and got the RAM there as well; they are one of the two most recommended RAM vendors here. Do not install cheap "value" RAM - Macs are very finicky about their RAM (and any other hardware component). Here is the link to the RAM and SSDs:

They also have great install videos.
