iCloud in El Capitan keeps asking for Apple ID

In 9 out of 10 times when I boot up my machine (iMac 21,5“, Intel Core i5, Mid. 2011) it asks me for my Apple ID (which is identical with my iCloud and iTunes ID). A System Preferences window pops up and offers me the option to either type in the iCloud ID at once or do it later. If I choose „later“ - anything that has an iCloud connection does not work. If I do nothing - this window closes on its own and nothing iCloud connected works either.

I have this machine since 2011 but this behaviour started all of a sudden only about a year ago - I looked for its causes wherever I could but could not find anything that would explain it. EtreCheck does not seem to give me any clue either (s. today’s report below).

Strangely and for no visible reason it does not happen after every startup, but certainly no less than 9 out of 10 times.

This is certainly nothing deadly but a very big nuisance alright.

What is it? How can I repair it?
