Thunderbolt Solution for Early 2008 Mac Pro

Is there a solution to expand an early 2008 for compatibility with thunderbolt?   PCI card or any other option available?

Not aware of any with Mac Drivers.

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-ThunderboltEX-Thunderbolt-Expansion-Card/dp/B00NMUXI2 2/ref=sr_1_3/181-8067032-2147627?ie=UTF8&qid=1430355356&sr=8-3&keywords=thunderb olt+pcie+card

Sorry, I am confused.   This would not work with the Mac Pro, as it is an Asus and does not work with Mac drivers?

I don't know if it'd work or not, but I highly suspect not, without some custom drivers... but it may be a lead for you to look into further.

Thank you!

This card only works with (some) ASUS logic boards i.e. PCs, it does not and never will work with a Mac Pro.

  • Exclusively Compatible with ASUS 8 series MBs
  • Only supported on these motherboards: ROG MAXIMUS VI EXTREME, TUF SABERTOOTH Z87, ASUS Z87-PRO, ASUS Z87-PRO (V EDITION, ASUS Z87-PLUS, ASUS Z87-PLUS (VivoMouse EDITION), ASUS Z87-A, ASUS Z87-A (NFC EXPRESS EDITION)

What is more useful to know is that if you had a suitable ASUS PC and logic board, and had this card fitted then you can use an Apple Thunderbolt display with it.

The questions/answers in the link discuss that the logic board has to have built-in Thunderbolt. The PCle card only adds another Thunderbolt port, it does not add Thunderbolt capability

his will be compatible with the motherboard Supermicro X10DAi?

A:

I don't belive so. It is only compatible with Asus motherboards with a thunderbolt header. See https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ThunderboltEX_II/
Compatible Models*
MAXIMUS VI EXTREME… see more

To use ThunderBolt devices, a computer must have left the factory with ThunderBolt capability. There are NO expansion cards for ANY computers that add ThunderBolt later, and according to insiders in the Industry, there never will be.

The one card you have found is for a computer motherboard that is already ThunderBolt-enabled, but the ThunderBolt Hardware was removed onto an optional expansion card to save initial cost of the system.

If you need high-speed data for a drive or two, look into USB-3 PCI cards.

Thank you Grant!

Looks like this is a valid solution for USB3.0:

https://www.amazon.com/Ports-Inateck-PCI-E-Expansion-Version/dp/B00I027GPC/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430413507&sr=8-1&keywords=usb3+pci+for+mac

Is there an adapter so that I can plug a Thunderbolt Display into a USB 3.0?

If so, would I be able to daisy chain the displays?

There are no adapters TO ThunderBolt from anything else, and insiders say there never will be. Intel controls the chips, and does not want that.

You cannot use a ThunderBolt display AT ALL on a computer that did not leave the factory with a ThunderBolt port.

You CAN plug a Mini DisplayPort cable into a ThunderBolt port on a computer and use the Mini DisplayPort subset of signals to drive a DisplayPort family display, but no daisy-chaining.

from that amazon ad:

This PCI-E Card is incompatible with Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite or Above;

Is there a PCI compatible card that would add USB 3.0 ports to the computer?

This https://www.sonnettech.com/product/allegrousb3pcie4port.html is a card that will add USB 3.0 ports to a Mac Pro. It works in El Capitan and Sierra and Windows via Boot Camp and provides higher power charging.

It is also possible to get a USB 3.1 card. See https://www.caldigit.com/fasta-6gu3plus/ this card specifically come with Mac support. There are some other generic PC USB 3.0 and 3.1 cards but many of them do not work in El Capitan but do work in Sierra. However this USB 3.1 one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AAETL6Y/?tag=reality apparently works in El Capitan and Sierra, it does however require an additional power cable unlike the Sonnet and CalDigit cards.

FINAL WORD ON THIS....

You will NEVER be able to add Thunderbolt to a  Mac Pro aluminum, as Thunderbolt technology postdates the tech on these machines...AND..the System Bus itself is not as fast a Thunderbolt.

You can however get USB 3.0 which is 5Gbps in a PCIe card.

hello i bought a PCI card usb 3.1 work on my Mac Pro 2008 but thunderbolt with adaptator ( apple or akitio ) don't work

Mac Pro 3.1 2008
