Force Touch trackpad stopped working
I came home this evening to find that no haptic feedback is occurring when I click with my Early 2015 13" Retina Macbook Pro. I've only had it for 3 days.
Thankfully, I can still click because I had "Tap to click" selected under System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click.
Changing Click Pressure in the same window did not turn on haptic feedback. Deselecting and selecting "Force Click and haptic feedback" did not turn it back on. I have also logged out and restarted to no avail. Even in the screen to select the user to log in as, no clicks are registering. I have to type in the first few characters of the user name I want to login as for it to even select.
Am I stuck with returning this machine?
Hurry and take it back. You have 14 days from date of purchase to return it for an exchange or money back - no questions asked. Or you can have it repaired.
Please make a Genius Appointment before you take it in for service.
Weird. It now works after shutting down and starting up. Restarting didn't fix it.
Ah well. I'll monitor if it happens again and if so, I'll think about returning it.
I had the same prblem with mY MBPr Early 2015. It occurred After I connected my Tv via HDMI for looking a Movie. After disconnect the Tv had the Force Touch Trackpad doesn't work. After a Restart it had Works.
Next time this happens try logging into another user account (preferably a fresh new user) and see if it works or not. This will tell you whether it may be software or hardware related.
The exact same thing happened to me. Haptic feedback (and force touch) suddenly stopped working. Restart did not help, BUT a full shut down and start again fixed it. Thanks for posting that!
Same thing happened to me just now.
Detail:
- Macbook Pro 15 Inch 2015 (dedicated graphics)
- I did not full shut down before hand (just close the lid)
- I was running Safari at the time (Youtube) before closing.
- Happened when I open screen of the laptop
I'm having the same problem. I own Macbook pro 2015, "13. This is the second time the problem occurs. Some fiddling with switching between two of my accounts solved the problem first time round. But this time nothing seems to do it. I tried restarting, and i tried shutting down completely. Force touch still isn't working. I might have to take it to Apple Store, which I'd rather not do unless I absolutely have to. There is next to no threads on this subject on the web. Has anyone so far figured out what causes this to happen and how to fix it permanently?
Thanks
R.
Ok, after half an hour of not doing anything at all about it - I'd run out of ideas - the force touch comes back (sic!)
It now works again. What the heck is going on here?
I agree, it's very worrisome as it's a random problem! Just make sure you activate tap-to-click!!!
What I did was I shut down my Mac. After that I went into settings, turned off force touch, then turned it back on. Worked like a charm, hope this helps!
Thank you for your suggestion Wingo2298 H. McErnestway12456738790, I will keep it in mind if the problem recurs.
Another thing I want to put on record, in connection with this issue, is this. When the force touch stops working what also stops working is the 'click slider' in system preferences for trackpad. It can't be moved - mine was always on medium - neither to light nor firm. It gets stuck on its current the setting! Very strange.
I let the 14 days from the day of purchase window for exchange pass because I don't suspect hardware to be at fault. But Apple should be aware of the problem and provide us with the fix.
I have the same problem. The issue happens regularly when I hold the laptop on my knees. But when I keep the laptop on a table (or any other flat surface) it works well.
Hi All
I bought a brand new MBP 15" with dedicated graphics and 1tb SSD Drive, after just 3 days of use the haptic feedback stops, albeit the track pad works regardless. Unfortunately I was travelling outside of UK and could not do a 14 day return. The feedback works for a few clicks when I do a shut down and restart but it stops. I have also installed windows 8.1 bootcamp, it doesn't work - if I do a shut down and restart it works. I have going over all the solutions and replies to this problem, looks like it's a random issue with the new force touch-pad, but it is worry some. Apple should seriously look into.
Here's my two sense, as a Apple Certified Mac Tech.
Force Touch is related to power settings so shutting down and powering back on will temporarly fix the issue but then it will most likely return.
I would suggest to anyone have this issue to do a System Management Controller (SMC Reset): Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
This resolved the issue on my Macbook Pro 13" 2015
Hope this helps.
