auto unlock with apple watch not working

Hi

I have followed all instructions and tips from all websites with no success, my watch is on my wrist, unlocked, and the Mac cannot communicate with the watch, or when it has on the odd occasion the watch does not unlock the Mac, I still have to enter my password.  I have unpaired and repaired watch, logged off and on again in iCloud, turned handoff off and on again, the watch, iPhone 6s and watch are all connected to the same network still with no luck.  This should be a seamless easy process like most of apple functions, but it is just not working and this was the function that I was most excited about in this software upgrade, feels a bit like false advertising if it is this hard to get it working.  Can apple either fix this or can some tech guru help

We have had all the same problems above with a MacBook Pro Retina mid 2014.

(spinning wheel over hours)

Just discovered that Bluetooth was switched off at this MacBook .

After switching on Bluetooth and a restart, Auto unlock switched on within a minute and it works!

So the problem is that when you check the "Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac" checkbox in Security pref pane it fails and says you can't communicate with your Watch?

Do you have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled?  If so, try restarting your Mac, iPhone, and Watch, and try checking the box again.  Also sometimes if you just wait a few hours and try checking the box again it will eventually work.

Had similar problem. Had auto unlocked working fine for two days then one morning would not work, after much frustration and trial and error found the following worked. Turned off "handoff" on Mac and restarted laptop. Turned off "handoff" on watch via watch application on iPhone then restarted watch. Turned off "handoff" on iPhone and restarted iPhone. Turned on "handoff" on iPhone and restarted iPhone. Turned on "handoff" on mac and restarted laptop. Turned on "handoff" on watch via application on iPhone and restarted watch.  BAM!! auto unlocked worked straight away and fine since.  Hope this helps.

Don't think it had anything to do with turning Handoff off/on.  It more likely fixed itself when you rebooted one of the devices.

I had tried multiple times turning each device on and off with no luck. It was only after doing above sequence that things worked fine again.

I have a Macbook Pro Early 2015 and I cannot get this to work!  It is incredibly frustrating.  I have gone through all the steps.  I have tried to turn off and on handoff.  I have turned off and on bluetooth.  When I go to the bluetooth preferences, my watch shows but it does not show as connected and I cannot get it to connect (is it supposed to be connected?)  The mac does not show as a bluetooth device on the watch.  I have done all of the apple steps like turning on 2 step authenticating (which was a pain to switch all my devices too).  Of all the things Apple has done that make life so easy and so easy to setup, this is by far one of the most difficult.

I have tried all all the relevant fixes, settings, etc.  My mid 2014 MBA does not even show using my watch to unlock the MBA as an option.  Have spent the morning resetting all our devices.  Frustrating indeed.

Have spent the last few hours trying all the relevant fixes.  Using my watch to unlock my mid 2014 MBA doesn't even show up as an option in my security settings.  Frustrating indeed!

tcphak, have you confirmed that you can successfully send and receive iMessages from your Mac, iPhone, and Watch?

Sparkie39, thank you so much. This was the ONLY thing that worked for me. Thank you!

Yes, I am able to do so from all three, thank you.

OK, try this.  Turn off iMessages on your Mac by unchecking the "Enable this account" checkbox in Messages Prefs.  Then wait 30 seconds and turn it back on.  Then see if the auto unlock checkbox appears.  If it doesn't, try doing the same thing on your iPhone.

Sorry, nope.  Tried disabling/reenabling on both mac and phone and threw in a computer reboot too.  No go.

Similar problem

Tried everything from rebooting every device to all the suggestions on the forums.  I have no problem with the message showing: Unlocking with Apple watch... but then always moves on and asks for the password.

Instead of entering the password, I clicked cancel a couple times and it was unlocked by the watch!  Worked for 2 or 3 times.  Then would not unlock with the watch.  Had to use the password.  Next time it unlocked with the watch.  Not consistent at all.

This feature is very, very unreliable.

A clean install of El Capitan was done just a few days before Sierra was installed.
