MBP mid 2009 15" not booting in any mode

Hi guys,

So, after numerous search queries and attempts to create a bootable flash drive or boot at least in any mode, which all have not helped, I decided to make this post with a hope that someone will be able to assist me with my MBP.

The machine is MacBook Pro, mid-2009 running on El Capitan (as far as I know)

The Mac is not booting in Recovery or Safe mode. On startup, it shows a circle with a diagonal line across it (e.g. ⦸).

When booted in single-user mode, the only message showing is the "Error loading kernel cache (0x1b)". At this point, I have not succeeded in reaching Terminal.

In Verbose mode, the output I get before the Mac goes to Apple logo for about 10 seconds, and then goes to the very same crossed circle, is the following:

"efiboot loaded from device: Acpi (PNP0A03,0)/Pci(B10)/SAA(0,0)/HD(Part2,Sig00000DF8-66D4-0000-6932-0000AA090000)

efiboot file path: \System\Library\CoreServices\boot.efi

ERROR!!! Prelinked kernel corrupted

ERROR!!! Load prelinked kernel with status 0x800000000000001b

Error loading kernel cache (0x1b)"

All the solutions available online involve booting in Recovery or Safe mode (neither of options are available for me on the machine).

On top of everything, when trying to boot up from external volume (32Gb flash drive) with macOS Sierra on it, it goes back to the crossed circle again.

To stress out, at this point I have not found a way to reach Terminal or any other way of manipulating the current contents of the HDD (which also means I am not able to change the corrupted kernel neither by hand, nor by command).

I am hoping someone can guide me through the steps, which could possibly fix the issue. Or tell me that the machine is toasted.

Thanks for reading anyways.

It's a long shot, but have you tried resetting NVRAM and SMC?

Hi,

Based on everything you've tried, including trying to boot from a properly set up bootable USB flash drive (did you use one of these methods https://diskmakerx.com/diskmaker-x-5-x-est-enfin-disponible/?lang=en or https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372 or install a bootable OS on the flash drive How to set up and use an external Mac startup disk - Apple Support?), it sounds like a hardware problem, possibly the HD cable shorting out, but probably the logic board.

Yeah, that was like to 3rd or 4th thing I did. None of which helped.

Did you find any solution?

Since you have a MacBook Pro from 2009 they shipped with CD recovery disks. Insert the recovery disk into the Mac and boot to that by holding down the option key and selecting the disk. Then go to disk utility and erase Macintosh HD. Then go back to the main screen and install Snow Leopard on the reformatted disk. Then you can install newer versions of macOS. I had a similar issue and using the original CD shipped with the Mac fixed it. For future Macs that didn't ship with a CD you can use internet recovery instead by holding down option-command-R on startup (this won't work on Macs that originally shipped with a CD).
