Monitor goes black

Mac Mini OSX Sierra 10.12.6 with Acer monitor.  Starting a week ago the monitor indicates no connection and goes black for differing period of time, light changing between connection and no connection without coming back, until it does come back and is fine. I checked all the connections which are tight.  Is this a hardware problem (failure of monitor) or a software communication problem?

I also have a second problem which began around the same time, which would indicate a software problem.  Occasionally Siri will come on repeatedly for about five minutes and then go away ..... until the next time.

Any help would be appreciated.
