2011 Macbook Air Update Problems

     Hello. I recently bought a Macbook Air off of eBay, and it is still on OSX Lion. I want to update it to Mavericks but I can't find a way to do so. I'm sure it wouldn't be able to handle something like El Capitan or Sierra, so can someone help me with this? I opened up the "Software Update" application and it couldn't find anything. I also have never installed Mavericks before so it's not on an Apple ID I can use in the app store. Any ideas?
