Advice/guidelines on keeping the media files on...

Hello everyone,

A while ago I bought myself a macbook pro (2015) and so far I'm really loving it! The only downside is its rather limited hard drive space (256GB), so I've decided, even before buying the macbook itself, to also buy an additional external hard drive in order to keep my rather large music and photos collection still in one place, but certainly not on the internal drive, which would get cramped in an instant. I've found some tutorials on how to move iTunes' and Photos' folder location to the external drive, so I think that shouldn't be too much of a challenge, but I'd be glad if you could give me some general advice or guidelines on keeping the files organised and neat afterwards, e.g. how should I prepare for this procedure in the first place. For example, should I make one folder with subfolders for all my media, or should I just move the library location or the whole app to the external drive? So far I've had most problems with the Photos app, which has to have photos synchronised in order to view them. So, if I move its location to the external drive, would I be able to make the app synchronise the photos and put it directly in the desired location? 

All those questions are coming from a rookie, who's still getting used to the mac's ecosystem, so please bear with me. Also, I hope I could ask further question, should I have them.
