MacBook No Boot Chime Broken Screen

Hi

So I got given this white unibody mac from my friend a couple of days ago, it had a broken screen and the hdd had been taken out. He said he hadnt booted it for a while and wasnt sure if it was working, so before i go and buy the parts to fix it I want to make sure that it is still functioning. I hooked it up to an external display and turned it on. The fan started and the disk drive made a noise but nothing on the screen and no boot chime. Any ideas?
