cannot change default browser thru preferences

On a Mac Book Pro, year 2015

 

Ordinarily one changes the default browser through the preferences app (General section). When I go there, though, I find no browsers listed, not even Safari. When I click on the dropdown box, I see a check mark (√) but nothing else, such as a list of installed browsers.

 

For awhile, I could not change the default browser at all, and then I tried Chrome and its internal function for that purpose. That worked. And now Opera's similar function works again.

 

What bothers me is having something wonky and not working within Preferences. I have the functionality I wanted back. Now, I just want to squash this little bug as who knows what else it might eventually affect if I don't fix it.

May I ask as well, when searching for other postings via the search function here, it listed hits from iOS and all the other Apple product line. Is there any way to restrict the search to just Mac, or even MacBookPro??
