iTunes:  Greyed out songs / auto

Why are songs in my library being auto-rated?   I have smart playlists based on the stars, and this "undocumented feature" is screwing everything up.

I want to remove the grey stars from all of the songs that have been auto-rated.

Then I don't want it to happen again.

Is there a fix out there?  Is there a setting in iTunes that I am missing?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi David,

As far as we can tell, there's no way to turn this behavior off or to remove the auto-ratings in a way that "sticks" -- except, of course, to rate everything yourself, individually.

You can throw a curve in the process by rating a couple of songs from every new album and assigning them different star ratings. That seems to give the algorithm pause.

I throw all newly added songs into a special folder with a title like "To Be Rated" or "Unrated Classical." Then if I really, seriously don't want this stuff to appear in a smart playlist, I add a rule like Playlist > is not > Unrated Classical. As time permits, I work my way methodically through these folders, removing tracks as I rate them.

You should give Apple some feedback on this. From within the app, select iTunes > Provide iTunes
Feedback.

Richard,

A belated "thank you".    I was hoping for a more painless solution, but your method here is effective.   I will also follow your suggestion to leave feedback to Apple.

Happy listening!

David

You can't. But the way I work around it is to rate everything one star to begin with. I then create playlists based on 2-5. It's not perfect but at least it prevents the auto rating.

That last workaround is interesting.  I will give it a shot.

This seems to be a known "bug", and apparently the Apple iTunes developers are choosing to ignore it.

Very disappointing!

My solution to this was to create smart playlists for "3 Stars," "4 Stars," "5 Stars," etc., and in the comments section, annotate 3, 4, or 5 Stars, respectfully - even if you already have notes in the comment section, as long as your star rating is included in there somewhere (I suggest at the very beginning in case you need to filter later), then set the smart playlists to add only songs that contain "5 Stars" (or whatever star rating you put) in the comment section. It's a bit of a pain in the *** at first, because you have to weed through all the false ratings, but after the initial creations and assignments, maintaining it is super easy. Even if somewhere down the line, you decided to re-rate a song (say from 3 stars to 4), just go into the 3 Star rated playlist, filter the ratings, find your newly rated 4 star song, and update the comments section from 3 to 4 Stars. It really isn't difficult, and I've found it to be the best solution over the years. Hope that helps.
