Personal Hotspot Unreliable

I have had very random luck getting onto the personal hotspot from my iPhone 6, using a 2013 MBP. Is this just me? I frequently have to turn personal hotspot off and then on on my phone, or reset network settings. I can never just pull down my wireless menu and select the phone and have it work. I am 8.1.2 on my phone, and have the latest Yosemite version on my laptop. I really would like this to work consistently, as promised. I can get it to work, but only after repeated tries and lots of resetting. I have also signed out of iCloud on both my computer and phone, several different times. It works, but only once. The next time I go to connect, it's back to square 1. Any ideas? Anyone else having the same challenge? Oh, and I am in the US on AT&T. And when I can connect to the personal hotspot, it's great and fast.

Thank you for the reply. I have followed all of these suggestions and sometimes they work — turning hotspot off and on on my phone, multiple times, usually works. But my problem is that I have to do things like this *each* time I want to connect. I would like to just place my phone next to my laptop, pull down the hotspot network, and log in. But each time I have to run through a bunch of troubleshooting to get it to work. So I'm aware of the tips, but no fix seems to last beyond a single use.

Any ideas?

I'm experiencing the same problem. I have to turn the hotspot on and off almost every time as well on my iPhone, so other devices can detect the hotspot.

I solved this issue w/ my windows machine by just connecting my laptop with my iPhone using the lightning cable. This seems to be reliable, no issues at all.

I'm not sure if this also works on a macbook, but u may want to give it a try.

Connecting my iPad to the hotspot.....well, it just irritates me.....switching to Samsung this month.
