Digital audio distorted since upgrading to Sierra.

Since I upgraded to Sierra, particularly the 10.12.1 update, I have noticed badly distorted audio from the digital output on my MacMini (late 2012). The volume is low and quite fuzzy. I'm using an optical cable from my Mini to an Audioengine D1 DAC to powered speakers. several weeks ago I posted to another group who suggested that I reboot in a safe mode in order to run disc utilities to repair any problems with my system files. It worked after a few tries and things have been fine until today. Now, not even running disc utilities helps. Any thoughts?

If your powered speakers are Audio Engine speakers, just turn them off and then back on.

On my Mid 2010 Macmini4,1 I solved the problem by opening "Audio MIDI Setup" app, select HDMI aoudio device, and select anything but 24-bit Integer for HDMI (I set it to 20bit Integer). That fixed my minijack optical out sound, strangely enough. Putting HDMI audio back on 24-bit Integer reproduces the problem reliably.
