Time Machine encryption taking forever

Am backing up a 3 TB RAID drive to another external RAID drive and it is taking forever.

Would it be faster to stop the encryption process and reformat the backup disk as encrypted initially ... THEN do a TM backup?

If so - how do i stop the encryption process on the external drive?
