Upgrade to Sierra

iMac late 2009, upgraded over years. Justt upgraded to Sierra (10.12.3) from Yosemite (which had worked fine). Now having problems with beachballing, slow response when booting up, when moving files on desktop, when trying to print, when duplicating files, when dragging documents to apps in Dock and when consigning docs to Trash and so on. Safari (10.0.3), Mail (10.2), Messages (10.0) , Calendar (9.0), EtreCheck (3.1.5 [343]);. Have not yet opened all apps.

Have checked Disk Utility, have looked at Console (3,000 actions per minute!), have booted into Safe Mode (slight improvement).

I am completely ignorant about what goes on under the hood, but I think I'd rather go back to Yosemite than put up with the status quo. If you can help, I'd be very appreciative.

I've included an EtreCheck output in case that will help.  Thanks, drdillo.

EtreCheck version: 3.1.5 (343)

Perfectly normal. Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac:

"Safe mode in OS X Leopard v10.5 or later also disables accelerated graphics. This makes the menu bar appear solid even if "Translucent Menu Bar" or "Reduce Transparency" is selected in System Preferences. Your screen might also "blink" or "tear" during login when your Mac is started in safe mode."

What you have accomplished is to prove that the problems you are having are limited to your Admin account, which I'm sure you now realize. It also indicates that your macOS installation is probably not a problem.

So go ahead and log back into your Admin account and give it some time to rebuild all the databases that were deleted when you used Safe Mode. Some will already have completed while you were in the new user account, but not all.

Have you taken care of the issues shown in Red with your first EtreCheck run?

Drag everything in /Library/StartupItems/ to the Trash. If you still need to use DynDNS Updater, download the appropriate client from https://help.dyn.com/update-clients/.

Hold the <Option/Alt>-key down and select "Library" from the Finder's Go menu. Look in your "LaunchAgents" folder and drag com.apple.SafariBookmarksSyncer.plist and com.ecamm.printopia.plist

to the trash.

Next time you decide to uninstall 3rd party software, check with the developer on the proper way to do so.

The only thing that might be an obvious issue is whatever PocketCloudService is. I'm not familiar with it, but should not be crashing.

Although I don't see anything else obvious that would slow you down, there is a lot of ancient software on your Mac that are probably out-of-date. A general housecleaning is in order to make sure everything you see listed in EtreCheck is still something you need/use.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. The reason for creating a backup is that the symptoms you describe could be indicative of an impending hard disk drive failure, so securing your data is a primary concern.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been, and describe your observations in a reply to this Discussion.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

Let me know what you determine.

Justt upgraded to Sierra (10.12.3) from Yosemite (which had worked fine).

You need to give your Mac at least 24-hours after the Safe Mode boot to rebuild many caches, databases and reformat a few things such as your Mail before you get too excited about Finder activities being slow. Spotlight is notorious for causing such things as it indexes multiple items and I can see that "mdworker" still has work to do in that area. In addition, you will probably have to reboot at least one more time after things settle down.

I see a few items that need to be cleaned up from some very old installations that you probably uninstalled improperly. Always check with the developer before an uninstall, even AppCleaner isn't perfect at doing that.  Let us know if you need help fixing the items shown in red.

I have tried to follow instructions. Thanks for offering help.

  1. Backed up everything to Time Machine.
  2. Shut Down
  3. Booted up in Safe Mode (8 minutes)
    1. Numerous times during boot, irregular white horizontal lines of varying thickness appeared to rise from the bottom of the screen to the top.
    2. While logging in (7 minutes) the “lines” randomly appeared.
    3. Ran Disk Utility First Aid: “volume x appears to be OK”
    4. Behavior of file icons on desktop same as in Normal Mode (i.e., sluggish, unable to open folders by dragging file on top, unable to save, print, quit or open files from within an application.
  4. Shut Down
  5. Booted into Normal Mode (8 minutes)
    1. Same behavior as Safe Mode except no “lines”
    2. SmartReporter says Boot Disk passes tests.
    3. Ran Disk Utility First Aid: again, start-up disk said to be “OK.”
  6. Created new Standard User Account.
    1. Logged out of main account (administrator), Logged into new account.
    2. Mirabile dictu! Wicked fast. No problems arranging files/folders. Could open applications super-speedy.
    3. Ran Disk Utility First Aid: start-up disk reported as appearing “OK.”
    4. Cannot access a bunch of stuff from administrator (DropBox, for instance.)
    5. Would really like to “fix” the Administrator account rather than use the recently created Standard account.
    6. Ran EtreCheck from within Standard Account. Still shows “below average” speed and has many of the same problems listed in my original post.
