Headset with mic

I have the Sade's headset and I can not get the mic to work. I can hear through the headset but I think the mic on the computer is the only mic that will work. I can not use the mute button. I have gone into settings and am very frustrated that I can not get this headset to work the way it is intended.  Please anyone help.  It's a USB headset. 

What computer model/year? What OS?
