mid 2007 iMac to 2017 iMac

I just purchased a new iMac to replace my 10 year old machine.

Given the differences in connection ports, what is the fastest way to move files from new to old?

The fastest way, is using your Time Machine backup.

The next best way, is using a direct Ethernet connection.

The only other way in your case, is to cobble together an expensive array of FireWire to USB-C adapters.

The specs are:

Old machine - 20-inch iMac (Mid 2007)

Old machine Input/Output - One USB: 3 2.0; One Firewire; One Firewire 800

New Machine - 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display (Mid 2017)

New Machine Input/Output - Four USB 3 ports (compatible with USB 2); Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)

Above I listed three ways that you can migrate or move files from the old Mac to the new.

1. The first is using your Time Machine backup.

(you have a Time Machine backup..?)

2. The second is using a direct network connection.

(a cat6 Ethernet cable between the two computers)

3. The third way in not necessary, plus requires it two expensive adapters and a FireWire 800 cable.

(a USB-C to Thunderbolt adapter and a Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adapter)

For more information, please open and read the Apple Support article in blue that I posted above.

I used an ethernet cable for the file transfer - ran about 10 hours overnight.

Pretty easy.

Thanks den.thed.
