How is hard drive encryption working on MacBook...

When I first bought my MacBook Pro (A1502 EMC 2875), hard drive encryption was not working, so I skipped it. Now the IOS is updated to 10.12.6. If I go back and reformat my hard drive and try to encrypt it now, will it work? Another way to ask this is, was the problem with the encryption back then in the hardware or the software?
