iMessage notifications appear on 2nd device aft...

I was under the impression that with iOS 11 once I read a message on my iPhone it would no longer appear as a new message on my second device, my iPad.  Is anyone aware of an option that will allow me to suppress the notification on my second device if it has already been read on my primary device?

I don't believe you need iOS 11 for that, it did that for me previously, do they have a good connection?

Even after I’ve read the message on my primary device when I opened up my iPad the notifications still pop up
