Mail problems with Virgilio server

Hello there. I'm trying by days to find a solution to my problem. I have to create a new account in my Mail client but the provider says that's better to put a IMAP server instead of a POP one. But, when I create another account it (puts mail and password) automatically create the Inbox server in POP. Where I can change that option? Is possible that there's no a button for this? And more, I don't see the messages sent from Mail to the web account, the same above. If I send them from the Internet I see them in Mail. What? Why?
