Macintosh HD Partition is Gone

Computer Specs (PSU, GPU, CPU, RAM, Motherboard)

13 inch Macbook Air

2.2GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor

8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 memory

512GB SSD storage

Intel HD Graphics 6000

Description of problem

There were two Recovery HD partitions, so I tried to remove one with Disk Utility. It kept failing and after rebooting the Apple logo would appear with a white bar underneath it. Some command line text would appear on the left side of the screen, before rebooting and restarting the whole process over again. I can't boot into any modes except for the Startup Manager. The only item that appears in Startup Manager is the Recovery Disk (but when I hit enter, the process of endless rebooting begins again). From the Startup Manager I can enter OSX Internet Recovery by hitting Command R, and am able to use the recovery utilities. I used the command "fsck -fy" with the terminal, but it just says "The volume appears to be OK". In Disk Utility, I ran First Aid on the main drive but it showed nothing wrong. However, the main partition is only showing up as untitled (image). What I really want is to access some old files on the partition that disappeared. Especially the Keychain. (I'm not sure if the TimeMachine backups have the Keychain backed up as well, but I'm pretty sure the password for my TimeMachine was on the Keychain anyways.) I also haven't backed up anything for about a year now.

When this issue began

A few hours ago after trying to remove a duplicate Recovery HD partition.

Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

Mess around in Disk Utility and screw up the partition the OS is installed on.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

Turning it off and on again. Messing around in Disk Utility.

Well, I think you've messed it up pretty well. Here's a way back you may not like because you will have to erase the SSD and reinstall OS X from scratch. I hope you have backups of your files.

Clean Install of Sierra or El Capitan on a Clean Disk

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command-Option-R keys until a globe appears.
  2. The Utility Menu will appear in from 5-20 minutes. Be patient.
  3. Select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
  4. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (usually, the out-dented entry) from the side list.
  5. Click on the Erase tab in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  6. Set the partition scheme to GUID.
  7. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  8. Click on the Apply button, then click on the Done button when it activates.
  9. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  10. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.

This should install the version of OS X that was pre-installed when the computer was new or Sierra.

I was afraid I'd have to do this. Thanks for the reply!
