I keep getting messages about security or junk ...

I have a Mac Mini (late 2012) with a processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, running OS X El Capitan v. 10.11.6. When I run my Safari browser, I keep getting these messages that either say my antivirus software has expired, or I need to run MacKeeper to get rid of the junk on my Mac, or help my Mac run faster, and then it takes me to a Norton Antivirus web page, a McAfee web page, or a MacKeeper webpage and tells me to download the software. These messages started appearing in the past 3 months and I have no idea why. I don't know if I inadvertently downloaded something, or somehow something got installed on my Mac. We have a router with a firewall, so I don't know if anyone got to my computer. And I have been having problems with my Mac running slow, but I also don't know if I can trust these websites, especially since the messages just suddenly started appearing. Any help would be appreciated because it freaks me out when I get these messages.

This is one of the messages I get.  And it seems to only happen on Safari. When I run Firefox, other than it being slow, I don't get any messages. Thank you.

Scams. Ignore and delete. You don't need MacKeeper or other such software.
