App switching delay

Using Cmd+Tab to switch between apps now takes 5-10 seconds, instead of being instantaneous. The app switching window just sits there, before eventually the selected program appears. Occasionally there's just a 1 second delay if I'm lucky. It appears to alternate between 1 second and then 5-10 seconds at random times. I frequently use the function to switch immediately back and forth between two applications and now having to go to the Dock instead. 

Appears to have happened since Sierra upgrade. It's made the whole OS pretty much unuseable. Driving me crazy.
