How do I set up my new mac mini for surround sound

Only 2 channel audio works even when playing a surround sound test track, multi Chanel settings are grayed out in the MIDI utilities.

Mac technical support has been no help

I am connected through HDMI, I have tried a few different cables and different inputs on my receiver.

I have a New Mac Mini 2.6 Sony STR-DN1010 3d surround receiver and a 55 inch Sony TV

the Mac sees this as SONYAVAMP

I have tried turning on the mac first then the receiver and TV

I have tried having the receiver and TV on then turn on the Mini

Can some please help this is my first experience with Mac

Thanks

All of these post are old and does not apply to the new Mac Mini I can see where some of this may be relevant, yet I am looking for specific information on the latest mac mini and operating system.

Before posting my request for help I read all of the above links.

It would be nice if Mac had instructions or a knowledgeable tech service line to help, yet they immediately give the wrong information without looking past the end of their nose.

While those articles are indeed old and talking about older Macs this problem has sadly been a longstanding one and I do not believe anything has changed. I would therefore support Illaass' advice and recommend you at least try those steps before discounting them.

I do regard the situation of getting surround sound working on a Mac an area where the user experience is miserably poor and inferior to Windows. (Clearly a damning indictment.) I even went so far as to log an official enhancement request to Apple over this issue but alas nothing has as yet changed.

It would help if you could provide more details about what programs and what file formats you are using.

Here is another relevant article. https://www.xlr8yourmac.com/audio/OSX_DVD_DigitalSurround.html

Here is another one although I don't think it will actually give you an answer. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/5-1-surround-sound-thru-hdmi.1592847/

The interesting point of the second article above is that many TVs even via HDMI only advertise themselves as stereo capable devices - which of course is true of most TVs. This would of course lead to the Mac saying I cannot send surround sound to a stereo only device. However if you have an AV receiver which your Mac has reported it is detecting rather than the TV then in theory this should not be the case. Just to check do you really have a 5.1 speaker setup on your AV Receiver?

Here are some newer links but they are similar

I have not discounted any of the links that were provided,

In fact all of these links that have been provided can be easily found with a simple google search.

To my knowledge there is no article published online that I have not read.

I am not looking for what people have done to their older Macs or receivers.

Every one of these articles have a starting point where their problem is different than what mine is, yet you can see hordes

of people with the same problem as mine that have gone unanswered.

I am looking for documentation from Mac or instructions on how surround sound from the Mac Mini is designed to work.

All I can say is the little documentation or instructions Mac does provide *****.

Does your receiver/output device have optical digital input?

The Mac's headphone jack support digital out via:

I should not have to buy a cable when this should work via HDMI,

I figured out this issue on my own, I did not need to buy a cable,

I have the same problem. How did you solve it?
