Volume turns itself down

I have used the new nano for about 2 months without problem. All of a sudden I'm on a run and the music goes off. The volume had turned itself all the way down. I turn it up and somewhere between 10 seconds and 3 minutes it turns itself down again. The volume screen appears and I can see the volume slider going down. I turn it up and I see the slider going back up and then see it going back down by itself. Yesterday I ran with the thing in my had for 40 minutes constantly turning it up and it turning itself down. This completely defeats the purpose that I bought it for. It is tiny and clips to my shirt.
hi - i had this exact same problem. tried to do all the resets etc but it kept happening. took it back to apple store and they exchanged it with no questions.

i run with mine too and i suspect it was sweat getting into the device and effectively making the volume down button think it is being pressed. don't talk about sweat/running etc when you take it back as getting it wet voids the warranty.

i got one of those plastic plugs that fills the slot on the bottom and i run with that in and it's been ok since (this is #3: #1 the screen fried from sweat, and #2 had the volume issue)

Are you using a headset that has the volume controls on the headset wire?

i was using shure headphones without inline controls. it was definitely caused by the device itself, as it happened with no headphones attached. you could see the volume bar decreasing all by itself.
Sounds like either the button itself is sticking or the contact under the button is malfunctioning. It's certainly not a known software issue.
I have had the exact same problem with two different nano's now. I suspect it has to do with the volume control on the headphones along with the 6th generation has issues itself. I had to take mine back to the Apple store and get a replacement and the other one also has the same issue (in addition to other issues).
If this happens with no headset connected, there is something else going on.

Either the volume button is stuck or it has some water damage of some kind. Should check with Apple.

My ipad turns it volume down by itself after 2 months, also. This special feature disappears for a while and then returns. My question is this, why apple designed the ipod nano with a clip to attach it to your clothing when sweat can cause the device to malfunction? I choice not to get a warrenty because it has never did me any good. I have no apple store in my community, nor can I drive to a place with an apple store. I live in a place where the only way out of town is by airplane or boat. I cannot find a plastic plug for my nano online even at the apple store. Where do I get one? I do not want to pay for another nano without being able to purchase a plug. Discourged user!
I went ahead and bought a new ipod nano today. I noticed the volume bar is already going down a tad bit on its own. I've not even used it while working out. Just plugged it in to sync it. If anybody knows where to purchase a plastic plug online, please let me know.

I just did an eBay search for iPod dust caps like this (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Clear-Dust-Cover-Cap-Set-iPhone-4-4S-iPad-2-iTouch-iPod- Classic-Nano-/280753668015?pt=US_Tablet_Accessories&hash=item415e38ffaf#ht_1164w t_1156).

 

But getting these dust caps doesn't seem to have made any difference.

 

I had my first Nano replaced due to the volume problem, and it just started occurring on the second one this morning. I have headphones with a built-in volume control, but as Alan Fletcher stated, it happens without headphones attached. I use the thing for running, but I'm very careful about getting it damp.

I am having exactly the same issue.  I purchased my nano in December last year.  Then, in March 2012, while running at the gym, the volume kept turning itself down.  This happened on each occassion that I used the device at the gym thereafter.  It is very frustrating, particularly as this is really the only thing that I use the nano for (together with the Nike plus chip to track training).  I took my nano into the Apple store in Polanco, Mexico City, but the problem did not repeat itself, adn they will not replace the device (and anyway, what's the point of replacing it if the new one is just going to have the same problem).  I am using it with the Apple nano wristband.  What else am I supposed to do?

This Happened to me too... and i take AMAZING care of it... its stuck on the turning volume down right now...and its not water...but its my ipodtouch 4th gen...so its not just the nano

turns out it was when i accidentally got a drop of water in my button... to fix just let it dry out without using it... and it will evaportate...but dont touch it and make sure to leave it somewhere sunny so it will evaporate

My 6th generation iPod is doing the same thing with the volume.  I got this one as a replacement from Apple because the first generation I had apparently could catch fire.   I use my iPod with a wrist band too.  And same thing...the volume turns itself down to the point of muting itself.  I like my first generation nano better than this one by far.  I never had a single issue with it.  I am definitely regretting my replacement!  And...there is no warranty with this iPod or support I can get because they go off of the date you originally purchase your iPod.  Thanks Apple.  Now I know why I am not a frequent user of your products! 

I had the same problem. I was using headphones that had volume controls on the cord. Just on a hunch I tried a pair that didn't have those controls and I haven't had a problem for a few months or more. It could just be coincidence but I doubt it.
