buy sell
Hi all, I would really appreciate some advice here.
I currently own three Apple mac machines…
1. Macbook - W8******8QR
2. Mac Pro - CK******XYL
3. Powermac - YM******PB0
I currently use these machines at home (my Macbook I use at home and when I travel around).
I am a freelance video editor so all of my edit work is done on the Mac Pro.
I have recently moved into an office space where I will do most of my freelance work, so I need to consider my options. I could possibly move the Mac Pro into the office so I can edit from there but I wondered if I could possibly buy a powerful iMac to use there instead? Would that be an upgrade? I would certainly be interested in doing it for portability reasons.
As for the Macbook, I would like a lighter version to carry around. I would also like this machine to be capable of editing if possible.
Could anybody recommend some machines I could buy and whether I could part-exchange or how much I could get for the machines I currently have? What do you think is the most money-efficient way of doing this?
Thanks.

All prices are approximate and depend on the condition of the system and what someone is willing to pay.

An iMac would be a HUGE upgrade. Just do it.

The newest Macbook is less than half the weight of your old one, but not great for video editing, unless you're satisfied with the way your old MB edits video.
A 13" MacBook Pro is 1.5 lbs lighter than your old MB and will have MUCH great processing power than the new MB.
Sell all your old Macs get an iMac and a MBP.
No part-exchange.
Hi guys, I just wanted to come back here to say I have bought myself a second-hand iMac which was a good move.
I want to be able to edit on the move though, so I also want a powerful laptop - I'd say my budget is £600 absolute max! Is there anything out there I could get? I'm wondering if even a PC laptop might be a good move if it's cheaper? Sorry, is that a curse word here? ;-)
As long as it can edit with Adobe Premiere CC, it does the trick for me.
Please let me know thoughts/suggestions, thanks.
Not as many fanboys as you might think.
I purchased a 17" ASUS laptop for my daughter after her school recommended we get her a Mac. For about $2000 less than the top end Macbook Pro it literally destroys anything Apple her classmates are using. However I am IT for the house when I'm not IT at work or on these forums so she has support 24x7 and the Windows laptop is fine if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and putting up with a lot of useless bundled software that is best left to a vanilla install of Windows to clear out; and then there is Windows 10. Windows 10 is revenge for Windows 7 being the most stable OS in history, Windows 10 is the Anti-Windows 7.
On the mac side what is overlooked in many Mac/Windows comparisons is that the majority of software that comes bundled wth the mac is not only fully functioning it is all very similar structurally so learning a new app is relatively easy, all of it is supported when you update. Windows comes with a lot of demo ware or unusable ware. I can also tell you from supporting many Mac and "PC" laptops the Apple laptops are made from much better materials and tend to last longer, but a spilled cup of coffee can bring down the mightiest of laptops on any platform.
Anytime I purchase a mac laptop for a client I insist they get Apple Care, for the price of it you could end up playing 10 times the amount for a single repair after the 1 year warranty expires.
Bottom line:
Apple Laptops are aesthetically wonderful, solid builds with great built in software but often woefully underpowered (CPU takes a back seat to battery life and energy savings) and in some instances incredibly limited with upgrades; notably RAM can not be upgraded after purchase. Fewer Malware and Adware and no actual virus reported at this time. They are not immune to them, just no one appears to have developed one and released it in the wild. Macs integrate well with other Apple products, and don't need 3rd party software to be maintained - in fact many of those products cause problems.
PC Laptops, mixed bag; some high end PC laptops start approaching flagship Mac prices and some low end ones are built by baboons. If you don't mind getting "under the hood" (what you call a bonnet) to maintain it then they can be an inexpensive and powerful tool when you need it. If you game there is no question, if you need to do 3D animation or video editing on the go they can offer far more power for less price, most of them can be upgraded in a host of ways but some of them can be cheap and flimsy and will spend more time under repairs then they are used.
I think Jimmy about said it all. My only comment is, if you don't mind running Windows on a Windows machine, then that's the way for you to go. Me, I'll run macOS even given the price/power differentials.
for me I use both, I need both; 3D is my go-to need when I'm not supporting macs. I have built many PC's and know my way around one pretty well. My daughter is doing fine art and I plan to get her into 3D, she is also gaming, she is also using a very restricted account because windows is a double edged sword- and I'm on her computer either playing Skyrim or using the CPU to crunch renders so it's become my hot-rod to maintain.
For the rest of my family; Wife, little one, mom, sisters, in laws I am strictly telling them Apple Mac because I will not troubleshoot PC's with family over the phone - it does not work, and I wont spend another thanksgiving fixing a power supply. On the Mac I'll get my father-in-law trying to figure out what he calls "googles" which could be email, internet or a PDF from a law-firm looking for legal expertise, or my sister saying she won a foreign lottery and is it real - I have explained this to her many times, she's not getting it.
Ah such useful responses, thanks so much.
I think for me bottom line is I cannot afford a macbook powerful enough to edit with at the moment, as much as I'd like one.
I have used PC laptops and know my way around them, so I think it's going to have to be the option for now.
Next question is, what kind of spec should I look for to run Adobe Premiere CC on a PC? Can you guys recommend any models at all?
Thanks.
Here is a consideration.
Apple is strictly Intel integrated graphics on lower end models, and AMD GPU's on higher end models. There are no Nvidia options for new macs. If you go with FCP on a Mac then the system is optimized for AMD, the AMD's will also work for Premiere but as to AMD or Nvidia being the card of choice the internet is full of claims. All that aside you can get an aftermarket Nvidia card for Mac (or a more powerful AMD card) from 3rd party vendors and these will require a USB C or USB C adapter to work. Support is entirely up to the vendor and there is a price increase from buying an "off the shelf" card as you will need an external chassis, power supply, flashed card and drivers from the vendor (or possibly Nvidia)
If you want to stay with PC I would try go to with an Nvidia 10xx series card or a high end 9xx card with at least 4GB DDR5 RAM and 16 - 32 GB DDR 4 system RAM. I prefer ASUS but I can't tell you they are trouble free or that my first repairs to a one year old system nearly resulted in legal action and some memorable facebooking. While Dell now owns AlienWare these are still great computers IMHO and Dell service is actually very good, but the price tag for a system starts approaching Mac cost very quickly.
If I have not heard of a vendor I tend to stay away from them, there are a lot of companies that might make a great laptop but 6 months from now they are MIA and you need a display arm or a bezel and you wont find those types of parts for repair. I am not a fan of MSI and HP can go do something that would cause undue stress to the Mods here if I elaborated.
