Move Time Machine network disk to USB port

I have a network Time Machine Disk attached to the USB port of an Airport Extreme as my home network. This is great for backing up a Macbook Pro that spends 50% of its time elsewhere. However for one month each year it spends 100% of its time in Mexico – well out of reach of the network drive. I want to have a Time Machine back up while away.

Can I simply connect the existing drive directly to a USB port of the Macbook? Will it identify it as the same disk and 'just work'? OR... Do I need to take steps to reestablish Time Machine as if it were a new disk? If so what is needed?  Same questions in reverse, of course.

Click here and follow the instructions.

If you want to avoid having to erase completely your existing hard drive invest in another external hard drive to be used for Time Machine purposes only and plug that into your USB and you will be asked if you want to use this seperate hard disk with Time Machine.
