Waking Series 3 watch in nightstand mode

I can't seem to "nudge" the nightstand to wake the watch, the way I used to be able to do with my Series 1 watch. I don't know if it's the new hardware or the new os.

Watch is set to nightstand.

Any suggestions?

It may help to:

• Disable and then re-enable Bedside / Nightstand Mode via the Watch app.
• Restart your Apple Watch (normally):
  • Restart your Apple Watch - Apple Support
