How do I preserve my software and apps currently installed when installing a new IOS.  Applestore genius suggests wioing it clean and reinstalling 10.12, but I want to still have my third party software installed long ago.

Make a backup

• Time Machine
• Carbon Copy Cloner (1 month fully enabled demo period)
• SuperDuper (full clone of your system is always free)

Do your clean install.

When the install asks if you want to restore (transfer) any files from a backup (I do not remember exactly what it says), you point the install at your backup disk (all of the above backup methods will work with Migration Assistant).

That should bring back your older apps and preferences, along with all your personal data, pictures, movies, etc...

If for some reason the install fails, you can always use the backup to restore your system to its original state.

When doing a clean install like this, I prefer having 2 backups, using 2 different backup utilities, going to 2 different backup devices, as one "Oops!" can create a very bad day

Also if you choose one of the 2 cloning backups, just make sure they are reasonably good, by booting from the clone(s) (boot holding the "Option" key and select the clone).
