Is an iPad for me?

Alright I'm looking for a media device to also communicate with family while deployed over seas. One problem I am having is mass storage for movies, tv shows, music, and books. Most apple devices besides Macs do not support external hard drives besides a wireless one through an app download on the App Store. 

How are these wireless hard drives? Is it feasible to use a wireless hard drive along with an IPad or IPhone or would I be better off getting a 10.5 512gb iPad Pro? I will consider a laptop as well, but I have a gaming PC. So... buying another computer just for one period of time doesn't seem smart really.
