AirDrop iMac communication problem

When I open the AirDrop window, my iMac does not show the two options of 1) allowing me to be discovered by people/contacts/everyone  nor 2) don't see who you are looking for. In fact, I cannot see my iPhone 6 nor my iPhone 6 can see my iMac. We are both on the same network, both connected to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. On my iPhone I do see the options to be discovered and, in fact, I have selected it to be discovered by any one. I can use AirDrop on my iPhone 6 to communicate with my home MacBook Pro, but I cannot use it to share files with my iMac.  I am running my iPhone 6 with iOS v10.3.3 and my iMac Mid 2011 with MacOS 10.12.6 Would appreciate any suggestions, especially how to get the two options on the bottom of the AirDrop window (on my iMac). I assume that, if I make those options available I have a better chance of establishing a communication between the iMac and iPhone 6

Using AirDrop between a Mac and an iOS device requires that the Mac be a 2012 or newer model.
