Installing 2 Harddrives into a MacBook Pro

Hey Guys!

I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch Late 2011 model with a 500GB HDD and was thinking of upgrading it to an SSD.

From what I understand, you can install another hard drive into the laptop through replacing the optical drive with a caddie. It would work just like an external hard drive. Just that its inside your MacBook.

Lets say I install the new SSD into the main drive and use the existing HDD for where the optical drive should go. Is it possible to partition only the main drive to be able to boot both Mac and Windows? And have the HDD perform like an external hard drive that is able to be read by both operating systems? For example, I name my HDD drive 'HDD Drive 1', boot OSX and find ' HDD Drive 1'  in finder, shut it down and boot to Windows to be able to find the same external hard drive, 'HDD Drive 1'?

Trying to look for the cheapest solution to incorporate an SSD into my MacBook without compromising storage space. I also use both OSX and Windows often.

Educate me please.
